Classes in Woodwork and furniture making
In his studio at the Cooroora Institute in the Noosa Hinterland, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, Ross offers classes:
- one-on-one training,
- regular weekly woodworking and furniture making classes, and
- masterclasses in steam bending and chair design
Ross also hosts:
- artist residencies and
- Masterclasses with other leading artists, designers and makers.
All the classes are held at the Cooroora Institute, usually in the purpose built teaching studio directly adjoining the furniture studio, and all necessary woodworking tools and machinery are supplied.
Our classes are suitable for all levels of skill, from absolute beginners, through to experienced woodworkers seeking to fine tune their skills or explore specialist techniques.
In our weekly classes, we work on student directed projects.
Students begin with a hand tools only project - learning to work to a fine level with hand tools is fundamental to furniture making. As well as making furniture, we explore drawing, design development and sustainable design. Students will learn how to use hand tools, how to sharpen edge tools, and how to choose, make and tune-up hand tools. We also cover safe use of power tools (our workshop is equipped with high quality tools from Festool, Elu etc), and the safe operation of major static machinery (our machinery is industrial scale - and includes a Wadkin table saw and Wadkin jointer, 36 inch bandsaw, 20 inch thicknesser, spindle moulder, overhead router etc).
Thursday classes :
- mornings (9-12)
- afternoons (1-4)
- afternoons (5:30-8:30).
One-on-one classes are by arrangement, and weekend, week-long specialist classes, and masterclasses are by announcement.
Ross is an experienced teacher, as well as teaching from his own studio he is a regular guest lecturer in Product Design at the Queensland College of Art, and has worked as an instructor at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine, USA.
The Cooroora Institute and Ross Annels have hosted masterclasses in woodturning and surface decoration with Graeme Priddle, and Marquetry and piercing with Brian Reid, and woodcarving with Gary Field. Our Introduction to Woodworking for Women workshops are always popular.
